Unison vote for MHS deal
Meat hygiene bosses have agreed a deal with union leaders over pay and terms of conditions, it was announced. The Meat Hygiene Service said Unison members had voted to accept the deal after a period of negotiation.

Roberts to leave BMPA
Stuart Roberts is to step down as director of the British Meat Processors Association to take up a role with ABP. The BMPA management council announced it accepted his resignation and Roberts would be leaving later this summer.

NI butchers face off for skills competition
Some of the best butchers in Northern Ireland will be facing-off this September in the final of the Meat Skills Northern Ireland competition. An original entry of 25 talented craft butchers have been whittled down to just eight, four in the under-22 category, and four in the over-22 class.

FSA to bring MHS inhouse
The Meat Hygiene Service is set to be taken in-house by the Food Standards Agency (FSA). The FSA has announced that planning for the merger between it and the MHS, which is currently an executive agency of the FSA, will commence shortly, with the operational work of the MHS forming the core of a new FSA Operations Group.

Morgan identifies E.coli O157 lessons learnt
Welsh First Minister Rhodri Morgan has told the Welsh Assembly that the Pennington Report has shone a clear light on industry shortcomings. Morgan told Assembly Ministers that the Report laid responsibility for the outbreak squarely on the shoulders of butcher William Tudor and highlighted the principle that prime responsibility for food safety lies with businesses.
